What is Murano? A guide to Murano glass, lamps and craftsmanship
Murano is a small group of islands near Venice in Italy, but the name is today known worldwide for something very special: hand-blown glass. When people talk about Murano glass, they are not just referring to a material but to a long craft tradition where colors, shapes and techniques have been refined over generations.
Murano glass is often associated with vases, bowls, mirrors, chandeliers and lamps. What these pieces have in common is that the glass is made with great technical skill and a particular sensitivity to color, movement and detail. Each object bears the mark of the hands that created it, and for that reason Murano glass often feels alive in a way industrially produced glass rarely does.
At VETRO we work with handmade glass lamps, designed by us and produced in Italy in close collaboration with our glassblowers. Our lamps are rooted in a love of the Murano tradition, but created with our own eye for color, proportion and modern interiors.
What does Murano mean?
Murano is the name of a group of islands in the Venetian lagoon north of Venice. The island became particularly known for glass production after Venice's glass workshops were moved to Murano in the Middle Ages. This was done partly to protect the city from the fire risk of hot furnaces, but also to gather and protect the special craft.
Since then, Murano has been closely linked with glass. That is why the term Murano glass is used today for glass made according to the traditions and techniques associated with the area.
Murano is therefore not a color, a style or a specific shape. It is a place — and a craft tradition.

What is Murano glass?
Murano glass is glass made using traditional Venetian glass techniques. It can be clear, colored, opalized, marbled, twisted, patterned or decorated with special details. It can be shaped into everything from small decorative objects to large lamps and sculptural elements.
The special thing about Murano glass is the combination of technique and expression. The glass is formed while it is hot and fluid, and it takes great experience to control thickness, shape, color and pattern. Small variations are not mistakes but a natural part of the process.
It is precisely these variations that make hand-blown glass special. Two lamps may look similar, but they will never be completely identical. The color may behave slightly differently, the surface may have small individual traces from the process, and the shape may carry a subtle asymmetry. That is part of the glass’s character. Why is Murano glass special?
Murano glass is special because it is based on craft, experience and material knowledge. It is not simply a matter of blowing glass into a mold. It is about timing, temperature, movement and precision.
When a glassblower works with hot glass, decisions must be made quickly. The glass is constantly changing as it cools, and every step in the process affects the final result. It requires both technical control and an intuitive understanding of the material.
That is also why Murano glass often has a depth that can be hard to reproduce industrially. The colors are not just on the surface but are experienced within the glass. When light hits it, the expression changes and the glass attains an almost living quality.

What is the difference between Murano glass and ordinary glass?
Ordinary glass can be beautiful and functional, but it is often produced industrially in large quantities. Murano glass, on the other hand, is associated with craft, smaller productions and traditional techniques.
The biggest difference lies in the expression. Hand-blown glass has depth, variation and traces of the process. You can often see that the object was made by hand. It provides a warmth and individuality that makes it especially suitable for interiors where materials and atmosphere matter.
In a lamp the difference becomes particularly clear. When light passes through hand-blown glass, colors, patterns and thicknesses are emphasized. The lamp becomes not only a light source but an object that changes character depending on time of day, placement and surroundings.

What is a Murano lamp?
A Murano lamp is a lamp made of hand-blown glass with inspiration from or connection to the Murano tradition. It can be a pendant, wall lamp, ceiling light, table lamp or chandelier.
Murano lamps are often characterized by their colors, soft shapes and decorative glass. Some are simple and almost sculptural, while others are more playful in expression. What they have in common is that the glass plays a central role.
At VETRO we work with lamps where the glass is the actual starting point. Color, shape and the quality of light are not secondary details but what defines the lamp. A VETRO lamp should function both as lighting and as a handmade object in the room.

Murano lamps in modern interiors
Murano glass is often associated with vintage, Italian homes and classic chandeliers. But today Murano lamps also work particularly well in modern interiors.
A colored glass lamp can add warmth to a minimalist room. A white glass lamp can create calm in a bedroom or over a dining table. A wall lamp in hand-blown glass can give character to a hallway, a kitchen or a restaurant.
The interesting thing about Murano-inspired lamps is that they can be both discreet and striking. They can serve as small color accents in a room or act as a true statement piece. It depends on size, color, placement and the rest of the decor.

What is a Murano vase?
A Murano vase is a vase of hand-blown glass, often characterized by colors, patterns and a clear handmade character. Vintage Murano vases are sought after because they combine function and craftsmanship.
At VETRO our own love of Murano began with the hunt for special vintage finds — lamps and glass objects with history, color and personality. For several years we curated vintage Murano lamps for homes while simultaneously developing our own collection.
Today VETRO's universe consists of our own handmade glass lamps, designed by us and produced in Italy in close collaboration with our glassblowers. Our lamps carry the legacy of Murano glass forward but are created for contemporary homes.

How to recognise quality in Murano glass?
Quality in Murano glass is not about everything being absolutely perfect. In fact, small variations are often a sign that the glass is handmade. But there is a difference between natural variations and actual defects.
When assessing Murano glass or hand-blown glass lamps, you can look for:
-
whether the glass has depth and life in the color
-
whether the shape appears balanced
-
whether the surface feels well worked
-
whether the variations feel natural and not distracting
-
whether the object has a clear material presence
-
whether the light is distributed beautifully through the glass
In a lamp it is particularly important how the glass behaves with light. Some colors become warmer, others more transparent, and some glass creates a soft, diffuse glow. Therefore you should not only see the lamp as an object but also as a light source.

Are all Murano lamps the same?
No. Murano lamps can vary greatly in style, quality and expression. Some are classic vintage lamps, others are modern designer lamps made with traditional techniques.
There are also many lamps on the market that use the word Murano very broadly. Therefore it is important to look at who is behind the lamp, how it is produced and whether there is transparency about the craftsmanship.
At VETRO we emphasize small productions, close dialogue with our glassblowers and a clear visual language. Our lamps are not mass-produced standard items but designed with focus on color, proportion and atmosphere.

Why choose a handmade glass lamp?
A handmade glass lamp adds something special to a room because it is both functional and decorative. It gives light, but it also gives character.
In the living room a glass lamp can create warmth and bring the space together. In the kitchen it can act as a soft counterpoint to hard surfaces. In the bedroom it can create calm. In a hallway it can be a small sculptural moment you meet when entering the home.
It is especially here that hand-blown glass differs from more anonymous lamps. It has a presence, even when the lamp is turned off.

Murano glass, color and atmosphere
Color is a central part of the Murano tradition. Glass can be clear and simple, but it can also be deeply colored, striped, marbled or opalized.
Colored glass changes a room in a different way than many other materials. It can add warmth without feeling heavy, color without dominating and personality without taking up too much space.
At VETRO we work with color as part of the lamp’s identity. A yellow lamp can add sunshine and warmth. A pink lamp can soften a room. A green lamp can create depth and calm. A white lamp can give a quieter and more classic expression.

How do you use Murano lamps in interior design?
Murano lamps can be used in many places in the home. The most important thing is to think of the lamp as both light and object.
Over a dining table a pendant in hand-blown glass can create a natural focal point. In a living room a wall lamp can provide soft side light and atmosphere. In a bedroom a smaller pendant or wall lamp can give a more personal expression than classic bedside lamps.
In smaller rooms colored glass lamps can function as small statement pieces. In larger rooms several lamps in the same color or shape can create rhythm and cohesion.

VETRO and our work with the Murano tradition
VETRO is a Danish lighting brand focused on handmade glass lamps. Our lamps are designed by us and produced in Italy in close collaboration with our glassblowers.
We work with small productions because each lamp requires time, precision and craftsmanship. That also means our range is not about large quantities but about expression, quality and the right colors.
Our approach is modern, but with respect for tradition. We want to create lamps that carry some of the history of Murano glass forward, while feeling natural in contemporary homes, restaurants, hotels and projects.
