How to maintain and clean your Murano pendant lamp
A Murano pendant is built to last for generations – but like all fine craftsmanship it deserves a little care. With the right maintenance, your mouth-blown glass will keep its shine, color depth and light quality for decades. Here’s everything you need to know.
Regular dusting
The most important thing you can do for your Murano pendant is simple: dust it regularly. Dust settles on the glass surface and gradually dulls the light and colors.
- How often: Every 2–4 weeks, depending on the room’s dust level
- Tool: A soft, dry microfiber cloth or a soft feather duster
- Technique: Wipe gently in circular motions. Avoid pressing – let the cloth do the work
- Important: Always turn off the lamp and let the bulb cool before cleaning
Thorough glass cleaning
A couple of times a year your Murano pendant deserves a deeper clean. Here’s how:
Step 1: Preparation
Turn off the lamp and let it cool completely. Remove the bulb. If the glass piece can be detached from the fitting, do so – it makes cleaning easier and safer.
Step 2: Wash
Mix lukewarm water with a few drops of mild dish soap. Dampen a soft cloth in the solution and wring it out thoroughly so it’s damp but not dripping. Gently wipe the glass with the damp cloth.
Step 3: Rinse
Follow with a cloth dampened in clean lukewarm water to remove soap residue.
Step 4: Dry
Dry the glass immediately with a dry, soft microfiber cloth. Do not air-dry – it can leave water spots from minerals.
What to avoid
Murano glass is robust, but there are some things that can damage it:
- Abrasive cleaners: Glass cleaner, alcohol, ammonia and similar products can attack the glass surface and alter the color over time. Use only mild soap and water
- Abrasive pads: Scouring sponges, steel wool or scouring powders will scratch the glass. Always use soft cloths
- Hot water: Use lukewarm, never hot water. Sudden temperature changes can, in rare cases, cause stress in the glass
- Dishwasher: Never. Mouth-blown Murano glass should always be hand washed
- Direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can, over time, affect the glass’s color intensity. Place your lamp where it won’t be in direct sun for several hours a day
Caring for fittings and sockets
Brass and chrome fittings also need a little attention:
- Brass: Wipe with a soft, dry cloth. Brass naturally develops a patina over time – many prefer this, but if you want to keep the shine, you can use a specialized brass polish a few times a year
- Chrome and nickel: Wipe with a damp cloth and dry afterwards. Chrome retains its shine without special care
- Cables: Inspect the cable once a year for wear, kinks or discoloration. If the cable is damaged, it should be replaced by a certified electrician
Bulbs and light
The right bulb is important for both light quality and the lamp’s longevity:
- LED: We recommend dimmable LED bulbs. They emit minimal heat (good for the glass) and use very little energy
- Color temperature: 2700K (warm white) best highlights Murano glass colors
- Wattage: Never exceed the recommended wattage listed on the lamp’s fitting
- Socket: Most of our lamps use E14 or E27 fittings – check the specific type on the product page
