Frequently Asked Questions

What is Murano?

Murano is an island group off Venice in Italy, world-renowned for its exceptional glass art and the traditional craftsmanship behind it. Since 1291, Murano has been the center of Venetian glass production, when the glassblowers were moved from Venice to Murano for safety reasons due to fire risk.

For more than 700 years, Murano’s glassblowers have refined techniques that have made the island famous worldwide. Murano glass is today associated with high quality, strong craft traditions and a distinct artistic expression.

Working as a Murano glassblower requires many years of training and great technical skill. Therefore, genuine Murano glass is not only a beautiful product but also a mark of quality that testifies to generations of expertise and dedication.

What are Murano lamps?

Murano lamps are handmade lamps crafted by skilled Italian glassblowers from Murano or the Venice area. They are characterized by their beautiful colors, vibrant patterns and distinctive shapes, where each piece of glass bears the mark of traditional craftsmanship.

At Vetro we create our lamps in close collaboration with our Murano maestro. Each lamp is developed with a focus on quality, authenticity and aesthetics — blending classic Italian glass art with Vetro’s own design language.

How are the Murano lamps produced?

Our Murano table lamps, ceiling lamps and wall lamps are made following the old glass traditions from Murano and the Venice area. The glassblowers are called maestri, and their special craftsmanship has been passed down through generations.

There are many different glass techniques, but the Italian glassblowers from Murano are known for guarding their methods and expertise. The basic principles are the same though: the glass is heated until it becomes workable, then shaped by hand with great precision, experience and sensitivity to the material.

The result is lamps where each glass piece has its own expression — created with respect for tradition and in close collaboration with our Murano maestro.

How does Murano glass get its color?

In the process of shaping a glass lamp, various minerals are added that give the glass its beautiful colors and special hues. This is part of the traditional Murano craft, where materials, heat and technique together create the glass’s unique expression.

In some designs, gold and silver are also used to create depth, shimmer and patterns between different glass layers. This technique is used in lamps, bonbonnieres and other glass objects — and helps make each piece of glass truly special.

Which bulb should I use for my Murano Candy lamp?

Our lamps have either E14 or E27 fittings, depending on the model. We recommend using LED bulbs in your Murano lamp — for energy consumption, lifespan and heat development reasons.

For our table lamps we typically recommend an LED bulb of approx. 4W.

For our ceiling lamps and pendants we typically recommend an LED bulb of approx. 8–11W for general room lighting.

You can certainly use dimmable LED bulbs and smart bulbs such as Philips Hue. You can also add a dimmable bulb directly to the cart. It requires a dimmer on the switch to be dimmable — if you don’t have a dimmer, it will function as a regular bulb.

Specifically for our white lamps we recommend 2700K, which gives a soft, warm white light. It is the most common color temperature for home lighting and highlights the glass’s expression in a beautiful and pleasant way.

Which lamp should I choose?

If you’re unsure which lamp suits your home best, we’re happy to help you find the right size, shape and color.

Our Murano Candy lamps are created for different rooms, needs and moods — whether you are looking for a table lamp, ceiling lamp, pendant or wall lamp. We advise you based on your room, your interior and the atmosphere you want to create.

You are always welcome to book a visit to our showroom at Amager Strand in Copenhagen, where you can see the lamps in person. You can also book a video call if you want personal guidance online.

What is swirl?

Swirl is one of the most iconic features of our Murano Candy lamps. It is a mouth-blown pattern where the colors twist through the glass and create a lively, almost fluid expression.

The technique requires great precision and experience to master. Swirl was especially used in Murano glass’s heyday in the 1960s and 1970s, and today it is a rare craft that only a few glassblowers master.

On many lamps you can both see and feel the texture in the glass if you let your hand glide over the surface. In daylight, the swirl pattern gains a special play where colors, shapes and glass layers come beautifully forward.

What is a flush ceiling light?

A flush ceiling light is a ceiling fixture that sits close to the ceiling and therefore doesn’t require much space or ceiling height. It is an obvious choice if you want a lamp that provides good lighting while also adding color, character and personality to the room.

A Murano flush ceiling light is flat on the back and can be mounted directly to the ceiling. Some models can also be used as a wall lamp, depending on shape and mounting. Flush ceiling lights are particularly popular in hallways, bathrooms, bedrooms and other rooms where you want beautiful lighting without a hanging lamp.

At Vetro we create Murano flush ceiling lights in collaboration with our Murano maestro and offer a wide selection in different shapes, colors and sizes. A Murano Candy flush ceiling light is therefore a beautiful choice if you want a handmade lamp with a striking expression — also in rooms with lower ceiling height.
