Frequently Asked Questions

What is Murano?

Murano is an island off Venice, Italy, world-renowned for its glass art and the craftsmanship behind it. In 1291 the Italian government decided, due to fire hazards, that glassblowers were only allowed to work on the Murano island. Over the past 700 years, everything from the glass bottle to the mirror has been invented by Murano glassblowers.

Murano is much more than just a beautiful island. Being a Murano glassblower is a special certification and a mark of quality in itself. It typically takes 7–10 years to become a Murano glassblower, so it is reserved for the very best.

What are Murano lamps?

Murano lamps are handmade by Italian glassblowers from Murano or the surrounding area. They are characterized by their colorful glass, patterns and distinctive shapes. At Vetro we curate only original Murano lamps and unique interior pieces.

How are Murano lamps produced?

Our Murano table lamps, ceiling lamps and wall lamps are blown following old traditions from or around the Murano area. The glassblowers are called maestros and their craft has been passed down through many generations. There are many glass techniques, but the Italian glassblowers from Murano keep their glassmaking techniques and craftsmanship closely guarded; as with other glass, it is first heated and then shaped.

How does Murano glass get its color?

Minerals are added during the process of shaping a glass lamp. These give the glass its beautiful color. Occasionally gold and silver are also used to create patterns in the different glass layers on both lamps, bonbonnieres and other glass objects.

Which bulb should I use for my lamp?

You can safely use LED bulbs and even Philips Hue in your vintage Murano lamp. The lamps have E14 or E27 fittings, and we recommend 25 watts for table lamps and 40 watts or 60 watts for ceiling lamps.

Which lamp should I choose?

If you are unsure which lamp to choose, we are available in our showroom or online. We have lamps for different rooms and needs, and we help you find the right size, shape and color if you are in doubt.

What is swirl?

It may be the most iconic feature of the Murano lamps that Vetro curates. Swirl is a mouth-blown pattern that winds through the glass and is a difficult technique for glassblowers to master. The technique was mainly used on Murano in the 1960s/70s and is now a rare craft only a few glassblowers possess. You can often feel the texture of the lamp's swirl if you run your hands over the glass, and it has a lively appearance in daylight.

What is a plafond?

If you are looking for a ceiling lamp that sits close to the ceiling and doesn't require much space or ceiling height, but still adds something extra to your decor, a Murano plafond lamp is an obvious choice. A plafond lamp is flat on the back and can therefore be mounted directly on the ceiling or wall. It is especially popular for the entryway, bathroom or bedroom. At Vetro we love plafond lamps and always have a large selection in various designs, shades and sizes. As you may have noticed, we also have many different Murano table lamps in stock.
